You’re too old! What are you thinking!
In my time I have been a self-employed accountant, a coach for various sports, kids and adult, an organizer for all these sports, a volunteer, a father, husband and human being.
It is my life experience that someone around you will try to put you and your dreams down for whatever reason.
Lately, these comments have been based around my musical dreams and my age. I was told, you cannot compete with all the young country musicians. I know. I am not trying to compete with anyone, young or old. I am just writing my songs. Playing my songs. Performing my songs. Telling my stories. And I hope you like them.
Now that I am in my seventies, I find these types of situations happening in my music adventure. I run into this “agism” attitude weekly. Feels like I am back in high school sometimes. But here I am standing tall, doing my thing and being true to myself.
Music does not judge my age. Music is joy. Music is creativity. Music is connectivity. Music is universal energy. When I write, play or perform, there is no age. There is just positive energy flowing into the world. Connection with the universe. Connection with the audience.
A few years ago, my wife and I were on a cruise in the Caribbean. I went for breakfast one day, guitar in hand and the chap sitting next to me said. “I always wanted to learn how to play guitar, but I am sixty-one. I’m too old to learn to play he said. I told him right then and there; you are never too old to start. I said that I was sixty-one when I finally picked up my guitar and started on my journey.
And so, I say to all. Find your passion, follow your passion no matter your age. Just get on with it. Feel the joy.
